ProTerra is a European project funded by Syngenta and carried out in collaboration with several research institutions in France, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal and Spain. It is focussed on soil and water conservation in perennial crops in the Mediterranean basin. ProTerra aims and objectives are:

1. To assess a variety of agronomic approaches for soil and water conservation in perennial crops (e.g. olives and vines) in the Mediterranean basin. The approaches being based on herbicide managed vegetative cover.

2. To compare the outcomes of approaches taken with relevant conventional methods, with particular reference to economic and environmental consequences.

3. To develop a structured approach to the dissemination of the resultant conservation methods to farmers and other stakeholders.

4. To use the data generated to engage in debate on the importance of soil and water conservation at Pan-European level.
