The Pedrera site is located within the Seville province of southern Spain and was selected for the project in 2001. It sits on a uniform, 3.6° south east facing slope at an altitude of 290m |

Climate: |

The climate at Pedrera is Mediterranean . Rainfall is concentrated in autumn and winter and summers are long and dry. Annual potential evapotranspiration is above the average annual rainfall of 550mm. Average annual temperature is 18° C. |

The soil is an “Albariza Estepa” (also known as a Calcaric Cambisol), which is typical in the area. It is a well drained soil with few stones, has a carbonate content of approximately 37%, an organic matter content around 1.6 %, and clay loam texture. |

The site is located in a rain fed olive grove, amongst trees which were approximately 5 years old in 2001. The variety grown here is used for both oil and table olive production. |

Tree rows are orientated up-slope down-slope and are planted at 6.5m x 7m spacing. This tree spacing is typical of new plantations in the area, although traditional plantations have larger tree spacing. The area of the whole plantation is approximately 17 ha. The management in the area is the traditional management in southern Spain , which is summarized below. |
